The Bogolan story

The cloth

Bogolanfini begins as hand-woven cotton strips joined into a panel, then bonded to a vegetable-tanned backing. It is dyed with a wolo bark tannin with iron-rich mud drawn from the Niger banks — the pattern is not printed on, it is drawn in mud and then the ground around it is lifted away. On this piece the mudcloth meets ivory premium linen.

The motif — Ntomi

The tape carries fanned chevrons opening from a spine. In the Bamana reading, Ntomi is the shade tree — gathering, welcome, shelter for others. Z-Vibe keeps the motif at heritage scale rather than shrinking it into a logo pattern, so the hand of the maker stays legible on the finished piece.

Why it sits where it sits

Mudcloth is placed on construction points, never scattered as decoration: crop neck band, left cuff, front placket. These are the lines the eye already follows on this silhouette, so the cloth reads as structure — an edge, a facing, a seam — and holds its meaning at three metres and at arm's length alike.

The hand-work

Each length is block-matched panel to panel — the atelier discards any length where the repeat cannot be aligned. Tape width and motif repeat are cut to the size band, so a petite run and an extended run carry the same proportion rather than the same measurement.

Tread, last and stack height were made unique to the shoe rather than shared across the register.

Fit & Size Guide
  • One size, house-adjustable: belts run on five holes with 5 cm spacing, caps on a covered rear strap.
  • Bags and cases are cut to the measurements listed in the material lens; strap drop is adjustable where fitted.
  • Scarves and ties are finished to house length — no shortening needed for a standard four-in-hand or single loop.

Linen & Leather Care
  1. Spot clean woven Bogolan panels with a barely damp cloth and mild soap; do not soak.
  2. Wipe leather and leather-look surfaces with a soft dry cloth; condition twice a year with a neutral balm.
  3. Keep hardware dry; polish the gold or bronze mark with a lint-free cloth only.
  4. Air after wear and store in the house dust bag, away from direct heat and sunlight.
  5. Professional clean only for silk ties and wool-blend scarves.
