The design story

Z-Tractor Harvest — a harvest tan boot with contrast stitching and a mudcloth tongue tile. Bogolan mudcloth is placed as a considered construction detail, never as surface print, and the aged-gold Z-Closure™ hardware signs the shoe.

Ten rugged utility boots built on deep-lug tread: honest leathers, reinforced rands and Bogolan mudcloth trim at the shaft.

Wearable specs

Z-Grip™ Harvest Cut · ZG-1296

Wheel lock range

14mm

3 collar positions · 4 wheels

Collar travels 14 mm across three detented positions — lock, walk and roll — each held by the carbon-composite pin.

Sole clearance · flush vs drop

  • LockFlush · 11 mm

Wheels retracted level with the outsole and pinned — pure walking geometry.

  • WalkFlush · 11 mm

Wheels stay level, brake damper released for a soft glide through toe-off.

  • RollDropped · 25 mm (+14 drop)

Axles descend 14 mm, lifting the shoe onto free-spinning hubs.

Stack · 30 mm heel / 20 mm forefoot, 10 mm drop

Z-Beam™ lighting modes

Off
Lighting module dormant. The lens reads as a brushed aged-gold inlay at the toe.
Running light
A low ivory running light traces the toe cap — presence, not glare.
Headlight
Twin forward headlights throw a warm beam ahead of the step for night streets.
Turn signal
Amber side pulse at the quarter panel, the pedestrian's indicator.

Laces · heavy Bogolan rope lace, brass-crimped tips

Chassis, hubs and heel cell are carried inside the midsole cavity so the shoe still reads as ready-to-wear.

Last
rounded volume last with a deep instep for thick socks
Stack
30 mm heel / 20 mm forefoot, 10 mm drop
Laces
heavy Bogolan rope lace, brass-crimped tips

Heavy-duty wheel cassette seated inside the lug block.

Guided demonstration · wheel collar

Step 1 of 3

Step 1 · Lock

You do
Press the heel collar down until it clicks.
Chassis
Both axles retract into the midsole cavity and the collar pin engages.
Underfoot
A firm, quiet outsole — the shoe behaves as a walking sneaker with no wheel travel.

Wheels fully retracted into the chassis, level with the bottom of the sole. The collar is pinned — the shoe walks like any luxury sneaker.

Collar pinned · wheels immobilised · wheel drop 0 mm

Z-Beam™ lighting

A low ivory running light traces the toe cap — presence, not glare.

Heel-cell battery with step-harvest trickle charge · USB-C service port under the medial collar

  • · Aged-gold anodised wheel hubs
  • · Polyurethane 62A treads
  • · Carbon-composite retraction collar
  • · Woven Bogolan mudcloth chassis facing

Story behind the design

The Bogolan story

Kere mudcloth in indigo & ivory, worked into the crop neck band, left cuff, right cuff.

The cloth

Bogolanfini begins as cotton mudcloth backed with a fine leather skiver so it can take a lace and a lasting pull. It is dyed with a n'gallama leaf bath, then river-mud fermentation over three passes — the pattern is not printed on, it is drawn in mud and then the ground around it is lifted away. On this piece the mudcloth meets oiled full-grain leather and technical canvas, reinforced rubber rand, woven bogolan mudcloth trim, deep-lug outsole, aged-gold z hardware. z-grip™ harvest cut (zg-1296) on the z-grip™ lugged rubber chassis, interlocking arrowhead cleats angled outward for lateral bite, rounded volume last with a deep instep for thick socks, stack 30 mm heel / 20 mm forefoot, 10 mm drop, laced in heavy bogolan rope lace, brass-crimped tips, diamond z at the lateral wall, z-vibe at the medial wall.

The motif — Kere

The tape carries tight lattice with hand-dotted corners. In the Bamana reading, Kere is the fence weave — protection of what has been built. Z-Vibe keeps the motif at heritage scale rather than shrinking it into a logo pattern, so the hand of the maker stays legible on the finished shoe.

Why it sits where it sits

Mudcloth is placed on construction points, never scattered as decoration: crop neck band, left cuff, right cuff, front placket. These are the lines the eye already follows on this silhouette, so the cloth reads as structure — an edge, a facing, a seam — and holds its meaning at three metres and at arm's length alike.

The hand-work

Each length is bias-cut for the curved runs, hand-basted before the topstitch so the motif never breaks at a seam. Tape width and motif repeat are cut to the size band, so a petite run and an extended run carry the same proportion rather than the same measurement.

Global Heritage Fusion™

African heritage, global luxury, future design: the mudcloth is set against European finishing and the aged-gold Z-Closure™ mark. Nothing is erased on either side — the meeting is the design. Different Roots. One Human Story.

Care · Spot-clean the mudcloth with cool water and a soft cloth. Dry-clean the body of the piece; the tape is colour-set but not bleach-safe.

Refinement provenance

Z-Studio refined · 1/7 views shot

Each step below reflects work that actually exists for this piece. Refinement is a design process — it does not imply the piece is production-released.

  1. Owner-approved design board intakeComplete

The signed design board was registered as the source of truth; silhouette, Bogolan placement and hardware were locked from it.

  2. Z-Sole Architecture™ assignmentComplete

Sole identity resolved for this style — Z-Grip™ Harvest Cut (ZG-1296) on the Z-Grip™ lugged rubber chassis, interlocking arrowhead cleats angled outward for lateral bite, rounded volume last with a deep instep for thick socks, stack 30 mm heel / 20 mm forefoot, 10 mm drop, laced in heavy Bogolan rope lace, brass-crimped tips, diamond Z at the lateral wall, Z-VIBE at the medial wall. Tread, last and stack height were made unique to the shoe rather than shared across the register.

  3. Bogolan signature verificationComplete

Mudcloth was confirmed as a construction detail (laces, panel, tongue or heel band) and not surface print, and the aged-gold Z-Closure™ mark was placed.

  4. Z-Glide™ wheel & Z-Beam™ lighting integrationComplete

The retractable wheel housing and lock/unlock travel were fitted into the sole stack, with the forward beam module set into the toe box.

  5. Z-Studio 4K refinement passComplete

Studio refinement rebuilt the shoe at 4K: cleaner last geometry, corrected proportions and true material rendering on the released angles.
