The design story

Z-Cargo Dune Convoy — a sand ripstop boot with a bellows pocket and a mudcloth heel band. The Z-Glide Wheel System™ is fitted: lock the wheels flush with the sole to walk, or deploy them below the sole to roll, with Z-Beam™ lighting at the toe. Bogolan mudcloth is placed as a considered construction detail, never as surface print, and the aged-gold Z-Closure™ hardware signs the shoe.

Five utility house boots from the approved Z-Cargo™ board — strap-and-pocket architecture with Bogolan pocket facings, the Z-Glide Wheel System™ and Z-Beam™ lighting.

Wearable specs

Z-Trek™ Convoy Cut · ZT-8253

Wheel lock range

14mm

3 collar positions · 4 wheels

Collar travels 14 mm across three detented positions — lock, walk and roll — each held by the carbon-composite pin.

Sole clearance · flush vs drop

  • LockFlush · 10 mm

Wheels retracted level with the outsole and pinned — pure walking geometry.

  • WalkFlush · 10 mm

Wheels stay level, brake damper released for a soft glide through toe-off.

  • RollDropped · 24 mm (+14 drop)

Axles descend 14 mm, lifting the shoe onto free-spinning hubs.

Stack · 22 mm heel / 18 mm forefoot, 4 mm drop

Z-Beam™ lighting modes

Off
Lighting module dormant. The lens reads as a brushed aged-gold inlay at the toe.
Running light
A low ivory running light traces the toe cap — presence, not glare.
Headlight
Twin forward headlights throw a warm beam ahead of the step for night streets.
Turn signal
Amber side pulse at the quarter panel, the pedestrian's indicator.

Laces · twin-tone Bogolan flat tape, obsidian on ivory, aged-gold aglets

Chassis, hubs and heel cell are carried inside the midsole cavity so the shoe still reads as ready-to-wear.

Story behind the design

The Bogolan story

Kanaga mudcloth in clay & bone, worked into the crop neck band, left cuff, right cuff.

The cloth

Bogolanfini begins as cotton mudcloth backed with a fine leather skiver so it can take a lace and a lasting pull. It is dyed with a n'gallama leaf bath, then river-mud fermentation over three passes — the pattern is not printed on, it is drawn in mud and then the ground around it is lifted away. On this piece the mudcloth meets technical canvas and leather utility upper with strap and pocket architecture, woven bogolan mudcloth pocket facing, bogolan mudcloth lacing, z-glide™ retractable wheel chassis with lock / walk / roll collar, z-beam™ toe lighting module, aged-gold z-closure™ hardware. z-trek™ convoy cut (zt-8253) on the z-trek™ all-terrain exoskeleton chassis, longitudinal rail flutes with a scalloped braking heel, narrow blade last drawn long through the waist, stack 22 mm heel / 18 mm forefoot, 4 mm drop, laced in twin-tone bogolan flat tape, obsidian on ivory, aged-gold aglets, diamond z at the lateral wall, z-vibe at the medial wall.

The motif — Kanaga

The tape carries twin arms above a bar, repeated along the tape. In the Bamana reading, Kanaga is the sign of the crossing — passage between worlds, carried by travellers. Z-Vibe keeps the motif at heritage scale rather than shrinking it into a logo pattern, so the hand of the maker stays legible on the finished shoe.

Why it sits where it sits

Mudcloth is placed on construction points, never scattered as decoration: crop neck band, left cuff, right cuff, front placket. These are the lines the eye already follows on this silhouette, so the cloth reads as structure — an edge, a facing, a seam — and holds its meaning at three metres and at arm's length alike.

The hand-work

Each length is cut on the straight grain, mitred at the corners and felled by hand so no raw edge is left inside. Tape width and motif repeat are cut to the size band, so a petite run and an extended run carry the same proportion rather than the same measurement.

Global Heritage Fusion™

African heritage, global luxury, future design: the mudcloth is set against European finishing and the aged-gold Z-Closure™ mark. Nothing is erased on either side — the meeting is the design. Different Roots. One Human Story.

Care · Spot-clean the mudcloth with cool water and a soft cloth. Dry-clean the body of the piece; the tape is colour-set but not bleach-safe.

Refinement provenance

Z-Studio refined · 1/7 views shot

Each step below reflects work that actually exists for this piece. Refinement is a design process — it does not imply the piece is production-released.

  1. Owner-approved design board intakeComplete

The signed design board was registered as the source of truth; silhouette, Bogolan placement and hardware were locked from it.

  2. Z-Sole Architecture™ assignmentComplete

Sole identity resolved for this style — Z-Trek™ Convoy Cut (ZT-8253) on the Z-Trek™ all-terrain exoskeleton chassis, longitudinal rail flutes with a scalloped braking heel, narrow blade last drawn long through the waist, stack 22 mm heel / 18 mm forefoot, 4 mm drop, laced in twin-tone Bogolan flat tape, obsidian on ivory, aged-gold aglets, diamond Z at the lateral wall, Z-VIBE at the medial wall. Tread, last and stack height were made unique to the shoe rather than shared across the register.

  3. Bogolan signature verificationComplete

Mudcloth was confirmed as a construction detail (laces, panel, tongue or heel band) and not surface print, and the aged-gold Z-Closure™ mark was placed.

  4. Z-Glide™ wheel & Z-Beam™ lighting integrationComplete

The retractable wheel housing and lock/unlock travel were fitted into the sole stack, with the forward beam module set into the toe box.

  5. Z-Studio 4K refinement passComplete

Studio refinement rebuilt the shoe at 4K: cleaner last geometry, corrected proportions and true material rendering on the released angles.
